The first 12 weeks of the £1.7 million public realm improvements in Dagenham Heathway came to an end last Friday (August 28).
In May, a Barking and Dagenham Council spokesperson confirmed to this paper that works, delivered by BeFirst, were set to begin in June and conclude at the end of August.
In an update issued this week (w/c August 31), a council spokesperson said: “These major works have improved the pedestrian environment, with the removal of street clutter and installation of brighter streetlights, parking provision changed to reduce the nuisance caused by illegally parked vehicles, and new cycle lanes introduced to reduce dangerous collisions with traffic.
“Additional final improvements to complete the scheme will be delivered in coming weeks, without the need for significant traffic restrictions.

"We thank the local community for their co-operation during the first phase of major works, which has delivered a much-improved public space for residents and local businesses."
Traffic restrictions were in place throughout the 12 week procedure including drivers only being able to use Heathway in one direction at times.
There were also two full closures of Heathway between the two junctions to allow for road resurfacing to take place on the weekend of Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 16 and Saturday, August 22 to Sunday, August 23.
The next phase will see further "minor" works over the following 12 weeks including digital advertising boards being moved, signage, lining and cameras being installed and green surfacing and directional arrows being applied to cycle lanes.
The spokesperson added: “These will be delivered without the need for significant traffic restrictions and, once completed, will see the new streetscape fully open for people visiting Heathway town centre.
"In the meantime, signs have been put up to highlight certain sections that are not yet ready to use.
“The delivery of these public realm works heralds a multi-year, multi-million pound investment plan to reinvigorate Dagenham Heathway as a key centre in the borough, which is being led by Be First on behalf of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham."
These improvement works are separate to plans to redevelop the area, including the proposed demolition of the Heathway shopping centre and construction of around 520 new homes.
While an application to formalise those plans is yet to be submitted, Be First lodged an environmental impact assessment (EIA) scoping report for 214 to 234 Heathway on August 24.
The EIA asks the council to confirm which environmental matter should be studied before a future application is submitted.
