A family-run Indian restaurant is looking out for the some of the most vulnerable people in their community - by offering free meals to the over 70s.

Tandoori Lounge in Hornchurch - an award-winning Punjabi restaurant that "stands apart from the typical high street curry house" - is introducing the offer as a "way of giving back".

The High Street restaurant is not only the highest rated in Hornchurch on TripAdvisor - with 4.5 stars - but it has also won a Travellers' Choice Award for 2024.

Run by Sukh and Honey Uppal, with help from their children and niece and nephew, the curry house prides itself on offering "authentic north Indian (Punjabi) inspired flavours" created from "high-quality ingredients".

The Uppal family and their kitchen staff use a traditional charcoal tandoor (clay oven) to bring a "unique live-fire cooking taste" to Hornchurch. 

This approach to Tandoori Lounge's cooking has paid off - it has been recognised with a Good Food Award for six years in a row.

Sukh Uppal said: "Our goal is to give people the chance to taste Indian food the way it’s made in our homes—authentic and bursting with flavour.

"We aim to offer an experience that stands apart from the typical high street curry house."

Opened in November 2017, Tandoori Lounge now goes beyond just offering tasty food.

The restaurant regularly hosts dinner and dance nights, bottomless brunches and live entertainment, including DJs.

Famous faces have also been spotted at Tandoori Lounge - including most recently former footballers Sir Trevor Brooking and John Barnes.

Alongside all this, the Uppal family supports charities with fundraising events and looks out for their community.

Their latest "way of giving back" is to offer free meals for the elderly, who may be "struggling with the rising costs and limited support".

Starting at the end of October, those aged 70 and over can get a free meal and a drink on Sundays between 12pm and 2pm.

In a post on Facebook, Sukh and Honey said: "Our team is here not only to serve you but also to spend time with you—whether it’s just sharing a conversation or offering a listening ear for any concerns you may have.
