A shopping centre in Romford has issued an update after a mass evacuation of its customers due to a fire.

Around 200 people had to be evacuated from the main building of the Brewery Shopping Centre, in Waterloo Road, at around 11am today (August 21) after a fire broke out in one of the centre's restaurants.

The Brewery have confirmed that this evacuation was while "smoke was extracted from the building" and that this was "completed quickly".

As part of the update, the shopping centre also said that the building was reopened to customers in the "early afternoon".

A spokesperson for The Brewery said: "We can confirm that around 11am today The Brewery’s main building was evacuated, while smoke was extracted from the building.

"It was completed quickly and the building reopened early afternoon."

Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from Dagenham, Harold Hill, and Greenwich fire stations tackled the blaze this morning.

The fire broke out at a restaurant near Sainsbury's, however the London Fire Brigade (LFB) did not confirm what restaurant.

Toby Carvery and Cosmo are the restaurants located on the ground floor near to the supermarket.

Fire crews managed to get the blaze under control within an hour.

A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade said: "The brigade was called at 10.50am and the fire was under control by 11.47am.

"A deep fat fryer containing around ten litres of cooking oil was destroyed by fire.

"Around 200 people left the shopping centre before the arrival of the brigade. There are currently no reports of any injuries."
