A huge area of grassland in Rainham was destroyed in a fire on the UK's hottest day of the year so far.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters battled the grass fire near Berwick Pond Road, in Rainham, yesterday evening (August 12).

The blaze obliterated an area of grass around 100 metres by 30 metres, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were alerted at 8.37pm, and the fire had been put out by 9.17pm.

The incident coincided with the UK's hottest day of the year so far - with temperatures reaching 34C in some parts of the country.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) urges the public to follow vital safety advice to prevent such grass fires during hot weather.

London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection, Craig Carter, said: "We know many Londoners will want to enjoy the nice weather by visiting a park or open space.

"However, we’re asking people not to take disposable barbecues with them as they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry.

"These fires are unpredictable and can spread rapidly, causing a significant amount of damage."

He added: "Don’t be tempted to barbecue on your balcony either.

"Balconies can contain combustible materials which can pose a risk to those barbecuing and others living nearby.

Mr Carter also said that barbeques should never be left unattended and should be positioned on level ground, away from anything flammable.

The LFB has highlighted other potential fire risks, such as discarded cigarettes and leftover rubbish.

The public is asked to dispose of waste correctly and to fully put out cigarettes to prevent fire.

Fire crews were called in from Wennington, Dagenham, Harold Hill and Barking Fire Stations.
