The Metropolitan Police have said officers are "unclear" if the cause of a major fire at a church hall in Romford was arson.
The force responded to an enquiry by this paper today (April 15) into the cause of the blaze at the church hall of St Andrew's Parish Church in St Andrews Road last week.
Around 70 firefighters in ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene of the fire at 12.30am on April 11 where they spent more than two hours extinguishing the flames.
When asked if the cause of the fire is being treated as arson, the spokesperson said: "Unclear as yet. Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing."
The update on the investigation into the cause comes as new aerial photos of the damage to the roof have emerged.
LFB said the fire produced heavy smoke and people nearby the disused church hall were told to keep doors and windows shut as a safety measure.

The hall also sustained damage to the ground floor, first floor and roof, with the latter visible in the photos.
Police and the LFB are jointly investigating the cause of the blaze, LFB said.
