Excited fans lined up in Romford after Brit Award-winning rapper Stormzy was seen filming a music video in the town.

Havering Council confirmed that a film crew had arrived in Romford and the video was shot yesterday (April 9) in various locations, including outside the Angel Way car park.

One video clip shared by a fan showed Stormzy, along with renowned Tottenham-born rapper Headie One, near Lloyds Bank in Market Place with a bus in the background.

Another, by passerby Melanieanne Straw, had the popular singer-songwriter shaking hands with young fans.

Melanieanne told the Recorder that Stormy waved at her children as they stood there watching the shoot for a couple of hours.

At the end when his crew were moving him away to leave, she said he suggested “let me just go see these guys”.

Melanieanne added: “He came over to us and said hello to all the children and shook hands, fist bumped and laughed and joked. He smiled and made everyone’s day.

“My son Leo was jumping up and down. He really is lovely. I was genuinely so thrilled that he made the effort to come and see the kids. You can see it meant the world to him."

About the filming itself, Melanieanne said the crew were particular about keeping the kids safe as it was on a road, and they had also guarded the area.

“With the bad reputation for some rappers and grime music it’s nice for the kids to have a positive experience with someone like this”, Melanieanne added.

Born in Croydon, Stormzy came to public attention through his series of freestyle tracks named Wicked Skengman in 2014.

His debut album Gang Signs & Prayer in 2017 won the British album of the year at the Brit Awards the following year.

Stormzy, whose songs include Vossi Bop and Big for Your Boots, became the first black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury in 2019.
