A historic barn which is "badly in need of major restoration work" has received a funding boost.

Upminster Tithe Barn will have £650,000 go towards it after Havering Council entered a grant agreement with National Highways for renovation and improvement works.

The money is part of funding ring-fenced by the Department for Transport for projects adjacent to the M25 in the area of the proposed Lower Thames Crossing.

It was added to Historic England's At Risk Register in November 2023 after its thatched roof was deemed to need "urgent work".

John Tyler, Upminster and Cranham Residents Association (UCRA) councillor for Cranham, claimed the money will go towards the roof and improved visitor facilities.

“The Tithe Barn is one of our most historic local buildings and has been badly in need of major restoration work for some years," Cllr Tyler said.

Havering Council, in decision details published on its website, stated that the funding would be effective from January 11.
