Investigators have launched a probe after a man was seriously injured in a plane crash in Upminster.

The incident happened near Damyns Hall Aerodrome around noon yesterday (April 4).

Police said a man's injuries are "potentially life-changing or life-threatening", while a woman suffered minor injuries.

Officers from Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) were deployed to the site and they are now examining the circumstances of the crash.

A spokesperson for AAIB said: "An accident involving a light aircraft near Damyns Hall Aerodrome, Essex, was reported to the AAIB yesterday afternoon and we have deployed a team to the site to investigate."

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters worked to free the man and woman, who were trapped in the aircraft.

Station commander Jeremy Davies, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters worked with partners to release a man and a woman trapped inside a lightweight aircraft in woodland near the aerodrome.

"They were both taken to hospital by road and air ambulance crews."

London Ambulance Service (LAS) dispatched several resources to the location,while London's Air Aumbulance was also in attendance.

Police were called just after 12.10pm and a spokesperson for the Met said: "Upon assessment, both passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital.

"The man has potential life-changing or life-threatening injuries and is being treated in hospital. The woman has minor injuries.

"The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) now leads enquiries."
