A nature reserve is under "review" by the RSPB - but there are no plans to close its visitor centre.

RSPB Rainham Marshes is part of a review by the nature conservation charity, looking at the operation of its reserves.

The RSPB, which manages more than 200 nature reserves across the UK, has been in talks with staff at Rainham Marshes as part of the review.

However, a spokesperson for the charity stressed that "no decisions or changes have been made yet".

They also confirmed that there are no proposals to close the visitor centre at the marshes.

A spokesperson for the RSPB said: "We continually review our operations to ensure everything we do aligns to our charitable and strategic aims and delivers the most impact for nature possible, within the resource we have.

"We focus on what we do best and where we can do this most effectively.  

"As part of this, we are currently looking at our nature reserve operations, and RSPB Rainham Marshes is part of this review.

"We are currently consulting with colleagues and would like to stress that no decisions or changes have been made yet."

RSPB Rainham Marshes caused controversy last year after it announced car parking charges would be introduced at its visitor centre - but the entrance fee was also scrapped. 

Milo Sumner, senior site manager for RSPB Rainham Marshes, previously told the Recorder that the changes were the fairest way to fund nature conservation work at the site.
