A butchers and a restaurant in Havering have been told their food hygiene standards need "major improvement".

De Quilox Lounge & Bar, in Romford, and Butchers of Elm Park, both scored a one out of five for their food hygiene - meaning "major improvement" is necessary - after inspections from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in July. 

This makes these establishments Havering's worst-rated businesses for results published in July.

Six other businesses, including pubs, takeaway restaurants and off licences, received a rating of three out of five last month, meaning hygiene standards are "generally satisfactory".

However, the majority of the 34 Havering businesses inspected by food safety officers in July were rated as having "good" or "very good" hygiene standards.

A total of 16 establishments, including Harold Hill Cafe and Chatterbugs Day Nursery in Romford, scored the top rating of five out of five, while nine businesses scored a four out of five.

Below is a detailed look at the lowest-rated Havering businesses in July:

De Quilox Lounge & Bar

The Nigerian restaurant in Victoria Road, Romford, was given a score of one by the FSA, meaning "major improvement" is necessary, after an inspection on July 9.

The food safety officer found that improvement was necessary in both the hygienic handling of food and in the cleanliness of the facilities and building.

This category includes having appropriate ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

De Quilox Lounge's management of food safety was found to need "major improvement" - meaning that their system in place to ensure that food served is safe to eat was not up to scratch.

The butchers in Elm Park Avenue was also given a one out of five score by the FSA, meaning "major improvement" is necessary, after an inspection on July 4.

However, the food safety officer found that the hygienic handling of food and the cleanliness of the building were both "good".

The family-run business opened in March with a view to serving the community.

It was the management of food safety that brought its score down, as "major improvement" was said to be necessary in this area.

This means that their system in place to ensure that food served is safe to eat was not up to scratch, or that there was little evidence to show the staff know about food safety.
