A woman and two men died after their car crashed into a stationary van on the A13, a court has heard.

Davina Kaur Ruprah, Sachin Kalia and Kiranjeet Sagoo died in the collision near Wennington shortly after 10pm on July 15.

They were travelling westbound on the A13 when their car lost control due to surface water and collided with a stationary van that had been involved in a collision a short time earlier, East London Coroner’s Court heard.

It was told that Davina was a 24-year-old paralegal who lived in Dagenham, Kiranjeet was a 36-year-old customer service adviser who lived in Ilford and Sachin was a 19-year-old student and bartender who lived in Barking.

A fourth person was taken to hospital for treatment but was discharged with non life-threatening injuries.

Post-mortem examinations carried out at Queen’s Hospital in Romford gave the cause of death as multiple injuries and road traffic collision for all three.

Opening the inquest on Thursday (July 25), coroner Nadia Persaud said she was satisfied that the facts of the death require a full inquest.

A provisional inquest date was set for February next year.

The Metropolitan Police said they were called to the A13 in Wennington Marshes shortly after 10pm on July 15, to reports of a moving car crashing into a stationary one.

Earlier that day the stationary van was also involved in a crash and Essex Police answered calls at its control room given that it was close to its border.

The fatal crash reportedly happened after police were called to the initial incident, but before officers were able to arrive at the scene.

As a result, both police forces have been made subject to a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to look into the response for the first incident.

No arrests have been made and police have appealed for witnesses and people with dashcam footage to come forward.

Det Insp Julie Trodden, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is an extremely tragic incident and my thoughts remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones.

“We are keen to speak with anyone who may have been driving along this stretch of road around 10pm on 15 July and who may have dashcam footage of the incident.”
