Patients at Romford's main hospital are being reminded that the main car park will shut this weekend for weeks.

Queen's Hospital in Rom Valley Way will have its car park closed by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) from Saturday (July 20).

Tthe multi-storey car park will be shut for three weeks before reopening in stages, the trust said.

"Urgent work" is being carried out until September 14.

This comes after a review by independent heath and safety inspectors found multiple issues with the premises.

"The lighting wasn’t good enough; the layout wasn’t safe for pedestrians; the doors were too heavy to open for parents with children and those with disabilities; and the tarmac on the roof had suffered significant sun damage," BHRUT said the review found.

BHRUT added that without work to the car park, there would be a risk of it shutting permanently.

Patients have been strongly advised to take public transport instead.

The closure will make 1,100 parking spaces unavailable for the first three weeks.

Residents with blue badges, cancer patients, dialysis patients and those entitled to concessionary parking will be unaffected. There will be emergency parking available for women who are about to give birth, the trust said.
