London MPs appointed into key cabinet roles by Keir Starmer

In total, 22 Labour MPs and peers now fill key roles in the cabinet, in a line-up including a record 11 women.

This follows the Labour Party's landslide election victory on July 4.

Born in Southwark, Sir Keir Starmer is the first Labour leader to unseat a sitting Conservative government since Tony Blair's win in 1997.

Starmer, a trained barrister specialising in human rights, served as the director of public prosecutions from 2008-13 before becoming the MP for Holborn and St Pancras in North London.

The new Prime Minister frequently talks about his "working-class" upbringing in Oxted, with his toolmaker dad and his mum who worked as a nurse.

David Lammy - Foreign Secretary

David Lammy is the MP for Tottenham - and now the Foreign Secretary too

David Lammy is the new Foreign Secretary.

Born to Guyanese parents in north London, Lammy was raised by his mother, after his father left when he was 12.

At 27, he made history by becoming parliament's youngest MP when he was elected in Tottenham in 2000, later becoming a junior minister under Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

In opposition, he said that Labour has an "iron-clad commitment" to supporting Ukraine.

Wes Streeting - Health Secretary

West Streeting is the Ilford North MP

Wes Streeting, the new Health Secretary, has shadowed his cabinet position since November 2021.

Streeting, the MP for Ilford North, has said that the NHS will need reform under the Labour government and previously remarked that he wouldn't "pretend the NHS was the envy of the world".

Prior to his election to Parliament in 2015, Streeting served as a London councillor and president of the National Union of Students.

Steve Reed - Environment Secretary

Steve Reed has been appointed as the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs secretary, a role he previously shadowed in opposition.

Born to a print worker and a nurse, Reed grew up on the outskirts of London before becoming the leader of Lambeth Council in 2006 and Labour MP for Croydon North (now Streatham and Croydon North) in 2012.

Reed wants Labour to become the "party of the countryside" and wants to support farmers through the green transition.

Ed Miliband - Energy Secretary

Although he is the Doncaster North MP, former Labour leader Ed Miliband is a Londoner.

He grew up in Primrose Hill and went to school in Chalk Farm.

His brother, David Miliband, has owned the family's Primrose Hill house since 2010.
