Bloodstained rags were left on a pavement after a man was stabbed near to a polling station.

A man, 19, was rushed to hospital after he was found with stab injuries at Whalebone Lane South, Dagenham, today (May 2).

Reports were first made of a stabbing at 5.18pm, but shortly after the Metropolitan Police received a second call reporting gun shots in the area.

After the man was found with stab injuries, he was taken to a major trauma centre in hospital and is in a life-threatening condition.

His next of kin have been informed, the Metropolitan Police said.

A man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

Graphic footage sent to The Post showed crowds of people gathering around the victim as they tried to help him following the attack.

A crime scene is in place at the location and enquiries are ongoing.

Whalebone Lane South is closed both ways from Gray Avenue to Wood Lane.

Diversions are in place including for the 173 and 499 bus routes.
