The MP for Romford has said the borough is "struggling" amid a "troubling wave of violent crime" after a man was murdered in Harold Wood station.

Conservative Andrew Rosindell said more must be done to restore Havering to a safe and family-friendly place.

Today (February 28) Miles Skai, 22, of Brent Cross in Hendon, was charged on suspicion of murder after a man was fatally attacked in Harold Wood station yesterday morning.

Mr Rosindell, who had commented on the recent stabbing in The Brewery Shopping Centre, Romford, by calling for more police in the town, urged for support from Sadiq Khan.

“A troubling wave of violent crime is occurring in our borough and we are struggling with the resources to cope," Mr Rosindell said.

"I have called on the Mayor of London to allocate more police to our area and I am working closely with the Romford Police to ensure that we can tackle this issue," he added.

This comes after the London Ambulance Service (LAS) pronounced a man dead at the station after it was called at 4.29am yesterday.

BTP and the Metropolitan Police had also attended and found the man with "extensive injuries".

Police have not yet released information about the man who died, but the fatal attack caused shock in the Harold Wood community, one where instances of violence such as this are said to be rare.

Brian Eagling, East Havering Residents' Group councillor for Harold Wood, joined Mr Rosindell in expressing his concern for the borough.

“I am concerned at what goes on in Havering, mainly in Romford, knowing that I was brought up [here] in Havering," he said. "What's happened is terrible," he added.

Mr Rosindell reiterated his call for Mr Khan to provide Havering, including Romford, extra police resources, previously having done so after The Brewery Shopping Centre stabbing on February 22.

"We must restore our community to being the safe and family-friendly place we have always known," the Romford MP added.

A Mayor of London spokesperson previously said that Mr Khan has funded 1,300 more police officers, and put an extra 500 in town centre teams since the start of 2022, to support The Met.

“Nothing is more important to the Mayor than keeping Londoners safe," the spokesperson added.
