A refuse and recycling centre's switch to an online booking system for DIY waste has been met with mixed reaction from readers.

People using Gerpins Reuse and Recycling Centre in Upminster, Havering's main disposal site according to the council, have had to pre-book slots since January 1.

The East London Waste Authority (ELWA), which oversees refuse disposal for Havering, Redbridge, Newham and Barking and Dagenham, announced the move on its website.

This was met with criticism and some felt the move would encourage fly tipping and make it harder for elderly people to use the site.

"[This is] how to encourage fly tipping in one easy step," said Kenny Jacob on Facebook.

“Shouldn’t we be making it easier to get rid of waste safely and effectively rather than putting more obstacles in the way?" added Adam Grace.

But Neil Greenhalgh, ELWA head of waste and support services, said it would make visits easier for residents by relaxing restrictions.

Mr Greenhalgh added that the changes would allow people to visit more frequently and dump increased volumes of waste.

"The new system is designed to allow residents to access the refuse and recycling centre more easily with an online booking system," Mr Greenhalgh said.

Not everyone was against the move, which means booking is required for any vehicle bringing DIY waste, including all vans or vehicles towing trailers, according to a statement on ELWA's website.

"There are so many that have already changed to the booking system," said Nikki Simmonds.

Another commenter, Sean Bennett, said the system was easy to use.

"Just make a booking, it’s not rocket science," he wrote.

But Sandra Rodwell felt an online system would make it more difficult for elderly people.

"[I'm] not happy," Sandra said. "Some older people do not have [access] online."

Mr Greenhalgh acknowledged that there would be a period of adjustment for site users.

"We expect that in time they will find the booking system easy and convenient to use," he said.

He also said that the updated system would reduce commercial refuse dumped at the taxpayers’ expense.
