Overnight closures on a major road look set to affect Romford motorists this week.

Government roads body National Highways has said that it will shut the A12 southbound carriageway between junction 16 and 13 in Essex nightly between 8pm and 5am from tomorrow (November 28) until December 2.

A significant diversion is in place which will see southbound traffic advised to go from the A12 at junction 17 to the A130, before turning west and joining the A127 until it meets the A12 at Romford's Gallows Corner junction.

"We'll do the work at night when traffic levels are at their lowest," National Highways added.

National Highways said the work is being done to rebuild the A12 Margaretting Bypass and remove its concrete road surface.

Works started on February 23 this year and are projected to finish in summer 2024.

A spokesperson added the diversion is necessary to allow the concrete road and some foundations to be rebuilt and resurfaced with asphalt.

The body added: "The surface of concrete roads that were designed between the 1950s and 1970s have an average life span of 50 years.

"Their surfaces are now reaching the stage where they will need to be repaired or replaced for safety reasons, and to help them be less noisy and better to drive on."

Further reconstruction, resurfacing and maintenance work is scheduled for this year on other stretches of the A12, the body said.

"It will be necessary at key points in our scheme to put in place some full road closures," it added.
