Halloween 2023: Havering homes and their spooky decorations

As families go trick or treating tonight, they are in for a wild evening of passing by skeletons, spirits, creepy animals and more.

Here’s a round up of some Halloween decorations shared by people on social media.

Hilldene Avenue, Harold Hill

Emma Day's Halloween display (Image: Emma Day)Emma Day, one of the residents, said: “It has taken us about two days to put it altogether. We love Halloween and seeing all the trick or treaters in amazing costumes. We hand out the sweet bags we make for them  - it is all part of the fun.

“We have been doing it for over three years since we became neighbours. Next year, we are hoping to go bigger!”

The woman behind this impressive display, Robyn Smith, told the Recorder that she had been working on it since the start of October and it took her two hours to set it all up.

She is such a big fan of the festival, she even runs her own business called Kingdom of Darkness selling horror T-shirts, soft toys, gothic candles and rugs made by her.  

She said: “I’ve been decorating the house since I was about 15. I’ve had other themes such as haunted dolls and butchers shop last year."

Oakley Drive, Harold Hill

Terrie Cooper in front of her Halloween display (Image: Terrie Cooper)For Terrie Cooper, Halloween is a family event when she and her husband, parents, children and friends dress up in scary costumes and hand out sweets.

She said: “This is my second year doing the scary maze as it was a big hit last year. My husband has made an electric chair and gallows for this year too. All the other props we have collected over the years.

“I love seeing all the children dressed up. Last year a mum came with her child. The kid loved it but the mum didn’t, she got scared and ran off down the road.”

St Neots Road, Harold Hill

Danni Louise Edward's Halloween decorations (Image: Danni Louise Edwards)Danni Louise Edwards shared that this is their first year in the house, but her partner’s mum and sister used to do the decorations every year. It took them only about 30-45 minutes to put these together and there is still more to do, she said.

Daventry Road, Harold Hill

Harold Hill resident Sandra Kyle said that she and her neighbour, John Quigley, do the decorations every year and it takes them all day to set it all up. 

She added: "Although I do like Christmas, my main one is Halloween. The houses only get done for this time of year - and I like to make cakes for the parents as I do feel parents deserve a treat as well.

"And I also make sure I have alternative to sweets for the children who can’t or parents don’t want them to have sweets."

Wood Lane, Elm Park
