A Harold Hill pub that has been running since the 1960s could soon be demolished to make way for homes.

A planning application to bulldoze The Alderman, in Chippenham Road, was sent to Havering Council on Wednesday (August 16).

It is part of the next phase of the Harold Hill regeneration scheme, which includes 150 homes proposed to be built between Chippenham Road and Kings Lynn Drive.

A public consultation for the Chippenham Road development was carried out by the council from July 14 to August 8. The council held two community “drop-in” events to inform people about the proposals.

The plans are said to “help meet local demand for new modern and sustainable homes set within a family-friendly neighbourhood".

Phase one of the plan included a new family welcome centre and a health centre in place of the former Abercrombie House hostel.

It is part of the 12 Estates regeneration programme that was launched as a joint venture between the council and developer Wates Residential in 2018.

The applicant for the Alderman planning application, Havering and Wates Regeneration LLP, has stated that building works on the site of the pub are expected to start in October.

However, there is still no date set for the pub’s closure yet.

An employee at the Alderman told the Recorder that while it is “imminent” that the place is shutting down, they haven’t yet been told when it is going to happen.

Manager Sandy Wyatt had earlier told MyLondon that since Covid the pub’s revenues had not recovered.

She had said: “With the heating going up and the price of food the last thing you’re going to want to do is have a beer. A lot of people just come in here for the company.”

A decision on the demolition of the Alderman is expected to be taken by October 11.
