An extension to the free school holidays meals scheme has been announced as Havering Council unveils further support to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.
A total of £1.6 million is to be funnelled into a handful of initiatives as the council looks to provide additional aid to those struggling with rising costs.
The four schemes to benefit from the extra funds include Havering Helps, with more than £600,000 to help residents apply for help with essentials including food and bills, and the school holiday meal scheme, which will be extended to the February half-term and Easter holidays thanks to a £400,000 cash injection.
Pensioners in receipt of council tax support will also have £50 credited to their accounts, and £150,000 is to be allocated to support care leavers with their fuel and food bills.
The Ukraine visa scheme will also receive some extra money, specifically for children’s accommodation and for families coming to the borough.
Cllr Ray Morgon, the leader of Havering Council, said: “As more and more people across the borough start feeling the pinch this winter, it's important that the council does everything it can to help residents protect themselves from the rising cost of living.”
He added: “Winter is coming – but please know that you are not alone and we will do all we can to help you keep food on the table to stay warm and well.”
For those looking for support through the winter, the council’s new cost of living hub, the recently-launched network of warm spaces, and its community roadshows are all available for residents.
